Introducing Z Planner, personal project management freeware!

A powerful personal project management applicationĀ to set goals, the list of tasks that lead to achieving that goal, all in your schedule in minutes!

There is a 20 minute learning curve, with a full tutorial that you can access from the software interface (Tutorial button).

Why Z Planner is worth trying (100% free, no adware, no signups…):

1. Project management theory applied to your personal schedule (task breakdown, quick rescheduling, single and recurrent reminders).

2. Not just a planning tool, but also a brainstorming tool because you can write out the list of tasks without interruption.

- You can write all the subtasks on the fly. Each time you hit ENTER, you can write the next one straight away.
- If you decide you want to make a task a final task with notes or duration, simply hit TAB once and it focuses on the final task checkbox. Hit SPACE and TAB and you can enter notes. TAB, then number of hours. TAB again, then the number of minutes. Then TAB and ENTER to validate.
- No fiddling with the mouse. No loading time.
- Then you can reorder tasks, break some down further (those that weren’t final tasks), and you have a step by step project automatically fitted in the time frames you specified, viewable in your schedule.

3. Late task management: What do you do when you get behind schedule? Do you re-copy tasks from your agenda? Forget them? Z Planner gives you 1-click access to tasks that you’ve fallen behind on so that you can:

- Get them done now.
- Reschedule them quickly (delete past time frames & create new ones).
- Reconsider doing them (sometimes things don’t seem so important the second time around).

Here is what a few users reported on their experience:

- All in all, I find zPlanner an indispensable tool in my everyday life. It helps me manage my time very efficiently, and I find that everything I read in time management books and manuals can be easily applied and integrated into the program. Read full review on CNET .

- This software makes me look good to my bosses! Read full review on CNET .

A process that generates ideas and sets the course.

“If I had six hours to chop down a tree, I would spend one hour sharpening my axe.” - Abraham Lincoln.

Breaking projects down into milestones and tasks, and breaking those tasks down into smaller tasks, is a thought process that generates ideas and makes you explore project details you might have overlooked by just starting on impulse. In the end, the result is more complete. It is better done, and it has ultimately taken you less time.

Once the tasks are broken down, they are automatically added to your schedule in the time frames you select for that project.

Download and try Z Planner now, and in 20-30 minutes (the time it takes to learn how to use it), you will have a powerful time and project management application you can use to achieve goals you never thought possible.

just wanted to report a possible bug: adding a task once as an afterthought in the “task breakdown window” causes the task to show up twice in the “daily schedule window”

    Hi BK,

Thanks for your feedback! No worries there though, this should mean that you have a task that starts at the end of a time frame, but is too long to be completed there, so it starts again on the next one.

If you want a 2-3 (or more) hour time frame that acts like a single one, select the first one, press ‘ALT’ key (hold it down), then select the last block. Then validate and you have a “big” time frame that can hold more tasks.

Play around with ZP and you’ll see you can have some very impressive results!

If anyone is reading this and has qny questions, don’t hesitate to ask!

    Kind regards,
    Charles

    Thanks for your reply :-)

New problem: Z-Planner seems to cause conflicts with the European date settings on my system. Whenever I have Z-Planner running I get “date errors” with programs that have been designed to run on European systems only. When I close Z-Planner, I can use those problems again without error messages or crashes … you might want to have a look into that.

    Hi BK,

Thanks for that I’ll look into it for the next release. I have a European machine myself but apparently no software that causes that kind of conflict.

Do you have a title of an application I can download to see the effect?

    Hi Charles,

install the mailer safer mail http://www.safer-mail.de/Download-Mailprogramm.htm and try to send mails while z-planner is running :-)
    Others:
    - TimOnize http://www.timonize.de/Timonize-Download.htm
    errors after using week view)
    - Life Clock v1.7f: error directly after starting program

Programs show date / time related error messages while z-planner is running in the background. They are back to normal function when I completely exit z-planner.

It’s in my list of priority upgrades :)

Thanks a lot for the info! I don’t think it should get in most people’s way, but it definitely requires a fix.

I contacted German customer support and we were able to determine the problem:
Starting z-planner automatically changes the regular European DD.MM.JJJJ to DD/MM/JJJJ under regional settings.
This causes all the follow up problems with other programs. Please contact me when a fix is available. Thanks.

Thanks! That will help nail the problem. It will take me a little time to get to it though, lots of promises to keep!

    Hi Charles,
I’m starting to use ZPlanner. After selecting either Open or Open Enable Auto Start (XP Only), I got a runtime error 339: ‘comdlg32.ocx’ or related files are missing.
Since my notebook uses XP_SP2 without the MSOffice suite, could this be the cause of such a malfunction?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello,

Sorry about that. The problem being that including it caused other problems, namely in Vista…

There is a solution though: downloading comdlg32.ocx and adding it to system32. You can get that file and detailed instructions here:

    http://windowsxp.mvps.org/comdlg32.htm

    @Charles

    Hi Charles,

Thx for your tip. Also I had to add the MSCOMCT2.OCX component. In the MS site they say these componentes are excluded from WXP Pro.

After installing and registering them, Z Planner works fine.

By the way, I have a schedule in a plain text file I wanted to copy into ZP, having both windows side by side. After restoring the ZP window I tried to relocate it but couldn’t drag it. It remains anchored. I was able to move the ZP window by dragging its borders toward the new location.

Also, how feasible is to get the schedule maximized into the ZP main window?

    Best regards.

  12. September 20th, 2009 at 06:29 | #12

    Hey MX,

It’s great that you could get it to work! :)

About maximizing the schedule, it might be a little tricky as each hour frame in the week would need to resize automatically. I guess the best option would be to make it larger by default, but making sure it doesn’t become unreadable for smaller screen sizes.

ZP being anchored should be an easy fix for the next release though.

Thanks a lot for your feedback! I hope ZP helps you accomplish goals! I’d appreciate if you kept me posted if it helps, A few success stories might get others to give it a try and before you know it…

The world becomes a better place :)

    Hi,

I am getting the following error when I launch Zplanner.
    Run-Time error ‘429′
ActiveX component can not create object

    Hello,

This seems to be another dll registration problem, the solution for this one is similar to others and details can be found here:

    http://www.mvps.org/access/bugs/bugs0007.htm

    Thanks for your report!
